The book follows the history of Berserk through the artwork shown at the exhibition, from inked pages to painted colour. It also gathers the cover art of all 40 volumes published by then, and a long interview with Miura, given about a year before his death. He died in May 2021; the book went on sale that September, when the exhibition opened.
Miura drew Berserk for three decades, and the reason it is spoken about the way it is has as much to do with the drawing as the story — the armour, the crowds, the architecture, the sheer density of ink on a page. This book puts both sides of that work in one place: the black-and-white pages and the painted colour.
Good to know
- Two formats: paperback and hardcover. The hardcover is Hakusensha's hardbound edition: 224 pages plus 8 plates, about 31 × 22 cm, close to A4. Both are the Japanese edition. The page count and publisher in the details above refer to the hardcover.
- Language: Japanese, in both formats. It is an art book first, led by the drawings and paintings; the interview is in Japanese.
- The Hakusensha hardcover was sold at the exhibition venues rather than in bookshops, and copies are now hard to find.
- For Miura's manga, see the Berserk collection.
